Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: How to make your website visible in 2026
What businesses should actually do in 2026 to be discovered and cited in Google Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Google now answers more searches directly with generative AI. The presentation of search results is changing, but the foundation is not: a website must be technically accessible, clearly organised and genuinely useful. According to Google, AI Overviews and AI Mode do not require a secret “GEO schema” or a special switch.
To become visible in AI search, do not write for a machine. Provide the clearest, most credible answer for a real person with a specific problem.
1. Answer one search need completely
A strong page focuses on one clear problem. Instead of publishing ten nearly identical articles for keyword variations, cover the important follow-up questions:
- What is the practical solution?
- Who is it suitable for?
- What does it cost and how long does it take?
- Which risks or limitations matter?
- What does a real example look like?
AI systems can break a complex request into several smaller questions. A logically structured article with precise headings can therefore be relevant to multiple parts of the same search journey.
2. Use first-hand experience, not generic summaries
Almost any system can produce an article called “10 SEO tips”. Content becomes valuable when it includes information only your business can provide: real pricing, delivery times, screenshots, mistakes, decisions and measured outcomes.
A web specialist can show a before-and-after performance comparison. An automation provider can document the exact manual steps removed from a workflow. These details demonstrate experience, expertise and trust.
3. Technical SEO remains the foundation
AI visibility cannot work when Google cannot crawl or understand the page reliably. Check:
- unique titles and meta descriptions;
- canonical URLs and correct language alternatives;
- internal links between services, projects and articles;
- working sitemap.xml and robots.txt files;
- fast mobile performance and healthy Core Web Vitals;
- useful images with descriptive alternative text;
- structured data that matches the visible page.
Structured data supports understanding, but it is not an entry ticket to AI Overviews. Google explicitly states that no special AI markup is required.
4. Make important passages easy to cite
A useful passage is specific and understandable on its own. Numbers, definitions, short checklists and direct statements are easier to use than long promotional paragraphs.
Weak: “We provide innovative digital solutions for every challenge.”
Useful: “A five-page small-business website starts at €800 in our setup and usually launches within one to two weeks.”
The second statement answers a real question, can be verified and provides immediate value.
5. Strengthen brand and author signals
Expert content should show who wrote it and why that person has relevant experience. A clear author page, real projects, consistent contact information and trustworthy external mentions help search systems understand the business.
Local service companies should also state their location and service area. A company in Germany can reach German-, English- and Ukrainian-speaking customers, provided every version is complete and naturally translated.
6. Measure in Search Console instead of guessing
Use Google Search Console to see which pages receive impressions, which queries trigger them and whether technical indexing problems exist. Individual rankings fluctuate; the more useful trend is growth in visibility, qualified clicks and inquiries.
Google's official guide to generative AI search visibility continues to recommend solid SEO foundations, original value and a strong page experience.
AI search SEO checklist for 2026
- Answer one topic completely on each page;
- add first-hand experience, numbers and examples;
- identify the author and business clearly;
- verify mobile performance and indexability;
- maintain internal links and language versions;
- update content when facts change;
- measure results in Search Console.
Avoid keyword stuffing and mass-produced pages. Google is more likely to reward useful originality than artificial text volume over time.
If the technical foundation is not ready yet, begin with an SEO-ready business website, then build content around real customer questions.
